Dental emergencies can happen when you least expect them, but knowing what to do in the moment can make a big difference. Whether it’s a sudden toothache or a knocked-out tooth, here are some helpful tips to manage common dental emergencies until you can see your dentist.
1. Toothache
If you have a toothache, rinse your mouth with warm water to clean it. Gently floss around the affected tooth to remove any trapped food. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the tooth or gums, as it can burn the tissue. If the pain persists, schedule an appointment with your dentist.
2. Knocked-Out Tooth
If a tooth is knocked out, handle it by the crown (the top part), not the root. Rinse it gently with water (do not scrub or use soap) and try to place it back into the socket if possible. If you can't, keep the tooth moist by placing it in a cup of milk or water. See your dentist immediately.
3. Broken or Chipped Tooth
If you break or chip a tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Save any broken pieces and bring them to the dentist. Depending on the severity, your dentist will discuss treatment options like bonding, crowns, or veneers.
4. Loose Filling or Crown
If a filling or crown falls out, save it and try to reattach it using dental wax or a temporary adhesive if needed. Avoid chewing on the affected side and see your dentist as soon as possible.
5. Soft Tissue Injuries
For cuts or bites on the inside of your mouth, rinse with clean water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. If bleeding persists, use a clean piece of gauze to apply pressure and head to your dentist or an urgent care center.
