What You Need to Know About Oral Cancer

Written by Dr. Holly Nadji Mar 6 • 1 minute read

Oral cancer may not be as widely discussed as other types of cancer, but it’s just as serious. It can affect the lips, tongue, cheeks, throat, and other parts of the mouth—and early detection is key to successful treatment.

What Causes Oral Cancer?

The exact cause can vary, but several risk factors increase the likelihood of developing oral cancer, including:

  • Tobacco use (smoking or chewing)

  • Excessive alcohol consumption

  • HPV infection

  • Prolonged sun exposure to the lips

  • Family history of cancer

Signs and Symptoms

Early stages may not cause noticeable pain, which makes regular dental checkups critical. Watch for:

  • Persistent sores in the mouth

  • Lumps or thick patches

  • Difficulty chewing or swallowing

  • Numbness or pain in the mouth

  • Hoarseness or a chronic sore throat

If you notice any of these signs lasting more than two weeks, don’t wait—get checked.

Prevention and Early Detection

  • Visit your dentist regularly for oral cancer screenings.

  • Avoid tobacco and limit alcohol.

  • Protect your lips with SPF lip balm when outdoors.

  • Practice good oral hygiene and maintain a healthy diet.
