How to Recognize Gum Disease Early

Written by Dr. Holly Nadji Apr 10 • 1 minute read

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is one of the most common oral health issues—but it often goes unnoticed until it becomes serious. Recognizing the early signs can help you take action before it affects your smile and overall health.

Early Signs of Gum Disease

Gum disease usually starts with gingivitis, the mildest form. Look out for these warning signs:

  • Red, swollen, or tender gums

  • Bleeding while brushing or flossing

  • Persistent bad breath

  • Receding gums (your teeth may look longer)

  • Sensitivity or discomfort when chewing

What Happens If It’s Left Untreated?

If gum disease progresses without treatment, it can lead to periodontitis, which damages the bone and tissue supporting your teeth. This can cause teeth to loosen or even fall out.

What You Can Do

  • Brush and floss daily to remove plaque and bacteria.

  • Use an antibacterial mouthwash to reduce inflammation.

  • Visit your dentist regularly for cleanings and checkups.

  • Quit smoking, which increases your risk of gum disease.
